Brief Course Overview
The HMIMMS course teaches an “all Hazards” approach to the management of major incidents in a hospital environment.
There are didactic lectures and tabletops covering aspects of preparation and planning, communication, triage and resolution. Attention will be paid to specific types of incidents eg CBRN, infectious disease outbreaks and public health.
Please note: For successful completion of the table top exercises, the course requires a minimum attendance of 24. Should this number not be reached, the course will be rescheduled for a later date.
There is a manual to accompany the course and testing will be done – an online pretest prior to the course, and an MCQ test and triage testing at the end of the course.
Who should attend this course?
This course is pitched at doctors and nurses working in hospitals. As it is not primarily a clinical course, hospital administrators and managers may find the preparation and resolution aspects of the course useful.

Completed: 1994, 1990, 2009
Current Position: Head of Disaster Medicine – Division of Emergency Medicine (UCT/ US)
Experience: 16 years of emergency medicine inclusive of the management of numerous major incidents. Coordinated the medical planning and implementation for the FIFA 2010 in the Western Cape.
