Modules 4&5 focus on the principles of Clinical Epidemiology & Critical Appraisal to help apply and drive evidence in Emergency Medicine.

Brief Course Overview

This is a semester course running from February 2012 to June 2012. This module is being offered using a combination of e-learning and self study. There will be an initial contact session 16 – 17 February to introduce candidates to research methodology, where after the study and assignments are web based. There is access to faculty to answer specific questions throughout the semester.

The specific learning outcomes are:

  1. 1. To understand concepts related to clinical epidemiology:
  • Framing research questions
  • Study designs
  • Measures of disease occurrence and effect
  • Random error, bias and confounding
  • Diagnostic tests

2. To understand concepts related to medical statistics:

  • Different types of data (e.g. measured, categorical, binary)
  • Descriptive statistics (summarizing and displaying data)
  • Statistical terms
  • Sampling, population,
  • Statistical significance (p-value, confidence intervals)
  • Sample sizes, power
  • Hypothesis tests

3. To understand the methodological and logistic problems involved in the design of a research proposal.

  • Select a topic and develop a well formulated research question
  • Conduct a literature review
  • Reference management
  • Developing a research proposal
  •  Submission to the Emergency Medicine Divisional Research Committee

Who should attend this course?

The course is intended for anyone interested in performing research in the future or anyone wanting to understand the basics so as to be able to critically engage with the medical literature.

Outcome

Please note that this course is one of the modules in the partial fulfilment of the MPhil in Emergency Medicine, offered by the Division of Emergency Medicine, University of Cape Town. One can enrol just for this course, or take it further and have the full module (10 credits) accredited towards the MPhil (EM).
Please remember that there is also a more advanced part – the CRM 2 module!
