Emergency Medicine Short Courses

Major Incident Medical Management and Support (MIMMS)

The MIMMS course is a major incident training course for any pre-hospital or hospital based emergency service that may be involved in a major incident.

The course includes didactic lectures but the primary focus will be on tabletops and the reinforcement of key skills in workshops including radio communication and triage.

Dates: 2-3 Feb 2010 & 2-3 Nov 2010

Hospital Major Incident Management and Support (HMIMMS)

The HMIMMS course teaches principles of management of major incidents in a hospital setting.

There are didactic lectures and tabletops covering aspects of preparation and planning, communication, triage and resolution. Attention will be paid to specific types of incidents eg CBRN (Chemical, Burns, Radiation and , infectious disease outbreaks and public health.

Wound Management (WM)

The WM course teaches assessment and appropriate management of wounds from the outset.

The correct identification of problem wounds, and application of suitable materials to ensure timely recovery and return to prior function and cosmetics appearance.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS)

The BLS course is designed to train healthcare providers in the lifesaving skills of both CPR, and relief of choking.

This course is aimed at pre-hospital and in-hospital healthcare workers.

Dates: 8 Feb 2010 & 4 Oct 2010

Aviation Medicine (AM)

The AM course provides a practical approach to patient care in the aeromedical environment.

The course is concerned primarily with the transport of patients via a properly managed aeromedical system. It provides students with an overview of the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to ensure successful and safe patient management in the aeromedical environment.

Emergency Management of Severe Burns (EMSB)

The EMSB course teaches the initial management and stabilization of the severely burned patient including burn pathophysiology and anatomy, resuscitation of the burn victim, management of the burned airway, treatment of burns in children, transfer criteria, management of different types of burn injuries and skills like escharotomy.

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

The ACLS Provider Course is designed to teach the lifesaving skills required to be both a team member and a team leader in either an in-hospital or out-of-hospital acute cardiovascular adult emergency setting.

Dates: 9 – 10 Feb 2010 & 5 – 6 Oct 2010

Advanced Neonatal Life Support (ANLS)

The ANLS Provider Course is designed to teach the lifesaving skills required to be both a team member and a team leader in either an in-hospital or out-of-hospital acute Neonatal resuscitation setting.

Dates: 22 Feb 2010 & 18 Oct 2010

Advanced Airway Management (AAM)

The AAM course covers all aspects of airway management, from basic facemask ventilation to tracheal intubation, difficult and failed airway management, and the use of rescue airway devices. It revisits many core concepts, dispels myths, highlights pitfalls and offers many useful tips to smooth airway interventions.

Dates: 25 – 26 Feb 2010 & 7 – 8 Oct 2010

Mechanical Ventilation (MV)

The course will give an overview on mechanical ventilation. Students will learn and practice about basic principles of mechanical ventilation, alarm settings, modes of ventilation and the use of pressure support, non-invasive mechanical ventilation, lung recruitment and an introduction on curves.

Fundamentals of Emergency Care (FEC)

The FEC course revises some of the important fundamental topics and principles in Emergency Medicine including ventilation, advanced airway management including RSI, cardiac arrest algorhythms and venous access. Emergency conditions and skills learned during the workshops will be practiced in various patient simulations or scenario-based teaching.

Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS)

The course focuses on the recognizing, immediate emergency treatment and decision-making pathways of managing the sick, injured and child in cardiac arrest.

Dates: 11 – 13 Mar 2010 & 11 – 13 Nov 2010

Prehospital Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PHPLS)

The PHPLS course aims to teach the candidate to assess unstable paediatric patients and to manage the acutely unwell child. The course also covers differences between paediatrics and adults, dealing with pain management in a child and skills related to paediatric acute illness management. It teaches this through lectures, skills workshops and simulations.

ECG

The course will cover the recognition and management of dysrhythmias as well as the use of the defibrillator.

Students attending the course will learn about dysrhythm recognition and pharmacological management, 12 lead ECG interpretation of ACS, STEMI, NSTEMI, Transcutaneous pacing, use of the AED, defibrilation and cardioversion.

Emergency Radiology (EMRAD)

This course provides delegates with knowledge on the interpretation and utilization of emergency radiological modalities focusing on the principles of various radiological techniques including Xray, CT, US and MRI and the relevant application to clinical emergencies.

Emergency Point of Care Ultra Sound (EPCUS)

This course lectures, trains & provide ample supervised practice opportunities to optimally utilise basic point of care emergency ultrasound in everyday clinical practice.

CME Days – Topics of interest in Emergency Medicine

This two-hour BREAKFAST meeting will COVER A a topic relevant to emergency medicine.

There will be three talks provided by a specialist in the field of discussion, an emergency medicine specialist and a paramedic.

Previous examples are toxicology emergencies and cardiology.

Advanced Emergency Management

This course will provide the more experienced emergency healthcare worker with detailed advanced training in 4 separate specialised advanced management modules. Each module must be booked separately and the candidate may choose the modules applicable to their day to day working environment. Separate modules can also be spread out over consecutive years.

Module 1 focuses on in-depth principles of Continuous Quality Improvement in the Emergency Centre (Part I) and Patient Safety (Part II).

Dates: 15 – 16 Apr 2010 (Part I) & 16 – 18 Nov 2010 (Part II)

Module 2 focuses on Research and Training in Emergency Care.

Dates: 29 – 30 Jul 2010

Module 3 focuses on in-depth principles of Leadership and Management in Emergency Care.

Dates: 1 – 3 Sept 2010

Module 4 focuses on optimizing your personal, medical practice & business financial management skills.
